Tourists used to leave their hearts in San Francisco. Now they just leave.
And San Francisco's new Mayor, London Breed knows why.
Her city is drowning in poop.
"There is more feces on the sidewalks than I've ever seen growing up here," Breed told station KNTV. "That is a huge problem, and we are not just talking from dogs. We're talking about from humans."
With 7,500 homeless living in the city, it's not surprising.
According to Business Insider, San Francisco's streets are dirtier than some of the world's poorest slums. The city already hands out 4.45 million free syringes annually to its intravenous drug users in an attempt to reduce blood-born diseases, but only 60 percent are discarded safely.
"We see poop, pee, needles and trash," said pre-school teacher Adelita Oreilana. "Sometimes they (the children) ask, 'What is it?' That's a conversation that's a little difficult to have with a 2-year-old."
It is a problem that has tourists holed up in their hotel rooms after walking through the city, and one which caused a major Chicago-based medical association to move its $40 million convention out of San Francisco.
People wonder, what will the mayor do? Or not do. She says harsher penalties for public defecation are not on the table. Instead, she thinks homeless advocacy groups who receive money from the city, should teach homeless people to "clean up after themselves."
Last year when Breed was president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, she introduced legislation which would create a place for people to inject drugs in a medically supervised setting. And after Mayor Ed Lee died last December, interim Mayor Mark Farrell introduced a $6 million plan for a 10-man medical team to administer "buprenorphine" to at least 250 street addicts, a drug touted as effective in stopping heroin cravings.
But in a city with 11,000 heroin addicts, that could take time.
A discussion of the Ruination of a City wouldn't be complete without introducing a racial component. And a lack of accountability. And a plan to introduce more drugs to solve a drug problem.
It's the kind of problem-solving you see in Democrat-run cities and states.
Last year, Oakland's city council voted unanimously to move ahead "with a plan to help those hurt by the war on drugs" -- by getting them into the legal pot business.
Oakland city council member Desley Brooks said, "Less than 5 percent of all cannabis operations are owned by people of color nationally."
She wants to change that.
She wants to require that half of all new cannabis permits be issued to people from neighborhoods hit hardest by the war on drugs, including those persons with a pot conviction.
It's about Reparations, she says. For people of color. That's what she says.
Funny. That's exactly what New York Liberal gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon says.
"I want to legalize cannabis in New York State," Nixon told a crowd at the NYC Cannabis Parade in May.
"Now that cannabis is exploding as an industry," she said, "we have to make sure that those communities that have been harmed and devastated by marijuana arrests get the first shot at this industry. We must prioritize them in terms of licenses. It's a form of reparations."
"Arresting people -- particularly people of color -- for cannabis, is the crown jewel in the racist war on drugs...We must expunge people's records. We must get people out of prison."
Funny. That's exactly what New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo did!
The Push, Push, Push further Left, from the Socialist Left in his Party, and in his state, finally worked. This week the governor pardoned seven illegal immigrants, five of whom were arrested for either possession of, or intent to sell, a controlled substance. He also granted conditional pardons to dozens of locked-up sex offenders.
So they could vote.
Felons as voters. Increased cash flow into city/state coffers from marijuana sales taxes. Money and votes, all masked as "caring" for the black, poor and downtrodden. Is this what the American people want?
I don't think so. But maybe Cynthia Nixon should take a walk in the shoes of We the People, instead of her Manolo Bahniks, so she can find out.
Hold the line, America.
